Product Description

Product Description

When Lesley is sent to Venice to interview world-renowned violinist Paulo Levi on his fiftieth birthday, she cannot believe her luck. She is told that she can ask him anything at all - except the Mozart question. But it is Paulo himself who decides that it is time for the truth to be told. And so follows the story of his parents as Jewish prisoners of war, forced to play Mozart violin concertos for the enemy; how they watched fellow Jews being led off to their deaths and knew that they were playing for their lives. As the story unfolds, the journalist begins to understand the full horror of war, and how one group of musicians survived using the only weapon they had - music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving but for older children., 11 Dec 2007
This is one of the most moving and eloquently written books I've read. You can't fail to be moved and gripped all at the same time as the story unfolds. The Mozart Question will undoubtedly bring tears to your eyes and Michael Foreman's illustrations are a delight to behold. One to let a child, 9+, pick off the shelf for themselves, not a book I would be inclined to give as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book must be read!, 8 Feb 2009
By Antigone (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I concur with previous reviewer about the beautiful writing of this book. It is an essential piece of literature. Yes, the issues it deals with are serious but necessary ones, but one isn't really aware of that throughout the whole book. It fits perfectly with curriculum coverage of WWII (yr 6 at our school). I gave it to my child at 10/11yrs old (mainly because I felt at a younger age the issues dealt with may not have been fully appreciated or too upsetting) and she was moved but throughly enjoyed and appreciated the writing and sentiments of this wonderful book. She actually thanked me for buying it!!!!!!!!!!!!

This review is from: The Mozart Question (Paperback)
This is a good story to use with older children to promote their critical & creative thinking and debate.
