Product Description

Product Description

Jon Pertwee's Doctor encounters the Ice Warriors in this classic TV soundtrack with linking narration by Katy Manning. 'May I present Princess Josephine...of TARDIS!' The TARDIS arrives on the storm-lashed planet of Peladon, just as it is being assessed for its suitability to join the Galactic Federation. Mistaken for Federation delegates from Earth, the Doctor and Jo become involved in a series of dramatic events at the conference. King Peladon's Chancellor has died in mysterious circumstances, and his High Priest is vehemently opposed to the Federation's advances. Amongst the other delegates are hermaphrodite hexapod Alpha Centauri, half-automaton Arcturus, and two Ice Warriors - whose species the Doctor knowsas old adversaries. Confined together in the Citadel, they struggle to counter myth and superstition with logic and reason. Is the Curse of Peladon about to strike those who form a union with the Federation? Has the Royal beast Aggedor risen to defend the planet's independence? And could one of the delegates actually be working to double-cross the others? The Doctor and Jo must work fast to solve these and other questions, and at the same time stay alive...Katy Manning, who plays Jo Grant in the story, provides linking narration, and in a bonus interview she also remembers her involvement in its original production.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jon Pertwee IS the Doctor!, 2 Jan 2009
In some ways, Jon Pertwee's Doctor Who stories are very well served by being presented in the audio format as some of his shows have not aged particularly well visually. They are from an era when television had a demonstrative pace of storytelling which was not frenetic or overtly visual and so the story unfolds very well in sound only, giving you the opportunity to hear the excellent scripts and performances without being put off by a slightly dodgy monster or effect.

As such these releases provide an excellent introduction to Jon Pertwee's slightly eccentric father figure style of Doctor, and as you go along with the story you warm to him, whereas on video he can seem a little less "matey" than some of the more recent performers of the part. Jon Pertwee's reputation as the Doctor seems to have diminished over the years, and this is unfair as his stories are never less than entertaining, and for a generation of people, Jon Pertwee quite simply IS the Doctor!

The sequel to this, "The Monster of Peladon" is also available in this format, and both work to create a very convincing alien society which seems to have a believable history. They also include the last appearances of one of the major monster creations of the old series - The Ice Warriors - and expand on their culture and society too.

Katy Manning is a bubbly, fun narrator and the bonus interview with her is a joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC PERTWEE ON AUDIO, 30 Oct 2007
By Mr. L. M. Jones - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
THE CURSE OF PELADON IS A CLASSIC ADDITION TO THE RANGE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON BBC AUDIO. KATY MANNING GIVES ONE OF HER FINEST PERFORMANCES AND JON IS AS RELIABLE AS EVER. I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL IT FOR THE NEW GENERATION OF WHO-VINES BUT THIS IS A WELL-PACED AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE ADVENTURE. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE REMASTERED DVD - WHENEVER THAT WILL BE - BUT THIS IS MORE THAN SUFFICIENT FOR NOW.
