Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Managers have a wide range of responsibilities, many of which include maximising the efficiency of their own time and work processes and ensuring that the people they manage are equipped with everything they need to function effectively and be productive and happy at work. This book covers many of the areas that a manager will need to be proficient in if they are to be successful at their job. There are chapters on communicating, time management, decision making, delegation, making presentations, interviewing, managing change and minimising stress, for example.

The emphasis is definitely on the practical, with real-life results always at the top of the agenda. To that end the text is punchy and to the point rather than rambling. Each chapter is clearly presented with plenty of tables, charts, checklists and self questionnaires to help you get the most from its content. Dotted around the pages you will find Power Tips--over 1200 of them in all-- designed to act as quick reference aids.

Some managers might only need to look at one or two of the areas covered in the book, and so Dorling Kindersley have published all 12 of the book's chapters individually in smaller pocketable handbooks. --Sandra Vogel --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for what it is, 8 Aug 2001
As an MIS Manager what I have to be able to do is put my hand on management reference information quickly and easily and this manual helps me do it. As a quick reminder of key points to draw to peoples attention in improvement workshops or snappy verbiage to add to reports etc they are ideal. They are mocked by the men in grey suits that have both the time and inclination to read the more weighty tomes, but if you want short, sharp, basic management guidance start here.

2.0 out of 5 stars Heavyweight title: lightweight contents, 22 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Dorling Kindersley books have a reputation for being beautifully presented, with clear layout and appropriate use of colour. This one is no exception on that front. However the contents are disappointingly flimsy with a tendency to state the obvious rather than introduce new suggestions. The tips are either so obvious as to be useless ("never offer to finance anything unless you can raise the funds"), set major goals without any indications of how to achieve them ("encourage the free flow of information between colleagues"), or are almost philosophical in nature ("regard disruptive team members as innocent until they are proven guilty").

In short, the book bites off more than it can chew. As a result, I'd find it hard to recommend this book to any but the most inexperienced manager.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment!, 8 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Essential Manager's Manual is a good introductory guide for new managers and makes a handy review text for existing managers. Very straightforward and easy to read, EMM is a worthwhile investment and a valuable addition to your office library.

1.0 out of 5 stars Essential?! Bah! Basic mgmt for idiots!
This book is probably what you would need when you start EXTREMELY fresh in your career. Advises like "you should look at your colleague when you speak to her" add no value. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply not enough content.

4.0 out of 5 stars What you need to know
This guide is almost exactly as its title says, except that it should read "basic" rather than "Essential". If that was the case, the book would have been worthy of five stars. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated; appalling text.
