Product Description

This is a very funny new story from one of our best-loved authors. It's Ivan's first day at his new school, and Boris is told to look after him, and translate for him, because Ivan can only speak Russian. After all, St Edmund's is a civilized school. Only problem is, Ivan isn't civilized. So when Ivan starts greeting people as 'lowly shivering worms', and asking for words in English like 'crush' and 'mutilate', Boris realises that he's going to have his work cut out for him. And that's just the start of the day...Little does he know that Ivan will leave a lasting influence, and that he himself will never enjoy listening to nursery rhymes ever again...This is a classic Anne Fine story - very funny and very real.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Read! Buy This!, 5 Jan 2008
By Aubree (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
I found this book for my niece. Before wrapping it up as a post-xmas present, I found myself reading it from cover to cover, unable to put it down. My niece will love it - it's got spot-on humor for the 8-12 set and is clever and educational to boot. Another winner from the inimitable Anne Fine. (For a first-rate adult read, read Fine's The Killjoy - another prizewinner but for the grownups).

5.0 out of 5 stars Wise, warm and witty, this is terribly good reading!, 28 Dec 2007
By J. Hope (Preston United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Tasked with looking after the new boy, Ivan who cannot speak English, Boris quickly finds himself embroiled within a moral dilemma as the comments Ivan directs towards his class-mates become ever-more inflammatory!

Comedy, chaos, communication barriers and classroom capers quickly ensue in perfect combination leading to a wholly cohesive and utterly satisfying read. Anne Fine has made dark humour her trademark and characteristically it is lavished throughout this novel in ways that are guaranteed to get guffaws and giggles from even the most staid reader. A worthy winner of the silver 2007 Nestle award, this short, highly engaging read is one that is not to be missed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fine , 23 Oct 2007

As my children are growing up in a bilingual environment I thought this would be right up their street. The book was OK but not a patch on some of the Morpurgo books we have read.
