Product Description

This is a chilling story of friendship, first love and family secrets. Estrella lives in Spain, next door to her best friend Catalina. They used to be inseparable, but then Andres, Catalina's cousin and the boy she's planning to marry, starts to gaze at Estrella instead. And Catalina starts to plot...Estrella's family have always done things slightly differently. Lighting candles on a Friday, for example. But these tiny things that Estrella has done all her life suddenly add up to something huge. She discovers that she and her family are Marranos - Spanish Jews living double lives as Catholics. And soon the outside world starts to intrude on her life - the world of the Spanish Inquisition, of neighbours accusing each other, of looting and riots. It is a world where new love burns and where friendship ends in flame and ash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Betrayal, 1 Nov 2007
By kehs (Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is a tale about the persecution of Jews in Spain during the 1500s. We learn how they had to hide their own religion in order to stay alive. Love, hate and betrayal all play a part in this tragic tale. Ignorance and prejudices ruined lives and sent many people to their deaths. The tragedy starts after Estrella falls for the boy that her best friend wanted to marry. Her friend betrays her and her family to the courts and watches them all go on trial for the crime of being secret Jews. This is a graphic tale, very violent but superbly written

4.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical and terrifying love story, 31 Aug 2007
Alice Hoffman's Green Angel is a big favourite of mine, and this is along the same lines. Estrella is the heroine who discovers her family's big secret and has to come to terms with the knowledge that she has a background she never imagined. But the real problem is her friend Catalina, who is resentful of Estrella's growing relationship with Andres (Catalina's cousin, who she has always said she will marry).

It's sort of a story of how friends can be close for years and then suddenly fall out, and how that friendship can turn to bitterness and hatred overnight. When Catalina discovers Estrella's family secret, she spitefully turns them in - thus destroying everything they have.

Be warned, there are graphic descriptions towards the end that are chilling and distressing - but they are necessary for the reader to understand the horror of the events Estrella is living through. The persecution of the Jews in Spain in 1500 resonates with every persecution of people before and after, and reminds us that nothing really changes.

The writing is in Hoffman's unique style, which both draws you in and detaches you, as though she can't quite decide whether she wants you to be swept along or to remain objective. There are some beautiful passages though and the reader can't help but hope that Andres will remain true to Estrella and that they will have a chance to build a new life together (not telling you the end though!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Remembering the persecuted, 20 Oct 2007
By Ms. D. M. Sholl - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Alice Hoffman is always a writer of immense depth conveyed through an easy and lyrical style. This book is pure magic to read as the title suggests. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition are brought home to the reader through the personal account of a young and beautiful girl whose best friend turns traitor through the old eye of envy. Pain and suffering are portrayed with such clarity that the reader is reminded of all those people, today and past who suffered through nothing other than their belief, their difference defined as deviance. Never forget, this book indicates, that betrayal comes in many guises but is always born of greed and envy.

The character of Estrella dances through the text, she could be any child born anywhere today. The love she bears for her family, and the compassion she is taught to respect is turned against her by Catalina, a friend who will do anything to get her own way. When Catalina's determination to marry Andre seems thwarted by his interest in her friend Estrella, the green eyed monster of jealousy knows no restraint.

To read this book is to learn the truely disgusting depths that supposedly 'normal' human beings can sink to in an attempt to possess what never belonged to them in the first place.

As Estrella asks, 'Remember me.'
