Amazon.co.uk Review

Kitty is fed up with being a cat and thinks that dogs have a far better time of it. They have much more fun, with all their playing, howling, barking and chasing robbers. They can even become film stars, for goodness sake.

But of course, there is a downside to being a dog too. Being put on a lead can't be much fun. And chewing on old bones is a bit sad. And of course, they always have to do as they are told. Whereas cats get to catch mice and prowl like tigers and climb trees and come and go as they please--so maybe being a cat isn't so bad after all?

Lydia Monks' highly original fable, I Wish I Were A Dog, reeking of envy and packed to the brim with exploding, vibrant in-your-face colour illustrations, is an absolute hoot. From the moment Kitty--the whiney, grumpy ginger cat dissatisfied with his lot--starts his whinging, to the moment he realises that a dog's lot is not always a happy one, this charming tale springs to life and is guaranteed to have readers, whatever age they may be, howling with laughter and dogs across the land wishing they were cats.

A must-have picture book for children under 5 --Susan Harrison --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Kitty is fed up with being a cat. Dogs seem to have more fun. But Dogs can't climb trees or catch mice. Maybe it's a cat's life after all! Lydia Monks' highly original fable of cat dissatisfaction will have every reader howling with laughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Eric Carle style collage illustrations - but better!, 11 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book is a must for dog and cat lovers. My 12 month old loves the humour of it. Monks shows every breed of dog and cat in every compromising position. It can be read time and time again because there's so much to look at. It's also very stylish and won a Smarties Prize. A great laugh and highly imaginative.

18 month old requests this one a lot. Likes the detailed picture of the park and all the dogs out and about. Not much to it but somehow charming and what can I say, the boy loves it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book!, 18 Jul 2007

This review is from: I Wish I Were a Dog (Board book)
This book arrived from Amazon this morning and my daughter opened the package herself while my mom was in the kitchen and I was at work. She then spent about 20 minutes studying the pictures and "reading" the book and afterwards was so delighted with it that she came up to grandma and said "I've just read a book about a kitty!". The illustrations are absolutely brilliant and enough for children to create their own story line, although the original one is pretty exciting too. When I came home we read it together twice and I loved it as well.
Definetely the one for children to enjoy on their own and together with adults!
