Product Description

Product Description
Nicky and Tasha wake up, but instead of their mum being with them, there's just a tape recorder on the floor, with a note saying, 'Press Play.' Mum's thought of everything: Tasha needs to wear a jumper (and not that thin shirt she'll get cold in), Little Joe needs his porridge, his lunchbox and constant companion Wabbit, the alarm clock needs to be reset and placed silently beside their sleeping father for when he needs to get up, and then there are all the final checks before they go - is the oven off? Is the cat out? Are the milk bottles on the doorstep? Have they got their school books? When Nicky and Tasha have done everything, they get out of the house saying, as their mother says at that moment each morning, 'Phew!'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really funny, but a nice idea, 7 Mar 2006
The children wake up to find only a tape recorder in their room with the message “Press play” on a note. So they do. The tape informs them – in their mother’s voice – that she had to go to work early, their father came home late, so they have to organise themselves – with the help of the tape recorder, of course. The children run through the morning chores partly listening to, partly mimicking and partly exasperated by the voice on the tape. So, according to instructions, while Nicky dresses Little Joe, Tasha washes herself (quietly) to then feed Little Joe, which turns out slightly more complicated than expected. While Tasha changes her clothes, Nicky puts together Little Joe’s lunchbox, which sounds easier than it is and ends up with Nicky and Little Joe shouting at one another. Resetting daddy’s alarm clock becomes and adventure involving all three siblings, because Little Joe won’t be quiet on his own. After Little Joe has been picked up and a few more things have been done, Tasha and Nicky finally head off for school, relieved, as is the tape recorder.
This is a very straightforward and simple story of all the things the children have to do in the morning instead of the mother.
What struck me is that the children just do what the tape recorder says – they don’t rebel in the slightest. The taped voice of mother obviously exudes authority. But it is more than that – the book gives the impression that the tape recorder almost has an (independent, sentient) life of its own. It is on during the whole story and says exactly the right thing at the right time, as though the children were being watched (which is perhaps why they do the tasks set). This adds another, almost creepy dimension to the story.
The end seems to corroborate this and thus is quite unexpected and open-ended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A playful book for kids that like mistakes, 18 Jul 2004
A girl called Tasha and a boy called Nicky wake up and find out that there is a cassete player on the floor with a note on the top of it saying press play so they do what it says and out floats their mothers early morning voice and she bosses them about to do things for their little brother little Joe lets see what results they get in Press Play.

The thing i most like about the book is that Nicky and Tasha get bossed about by their mother. The thing i dislike about the book is that little joe is always crying and it annoys me a little bit.

I would reccomend this book for kids that are from 8-12 and who like hilareous mistakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars A playful book for kids that love funny mistakes, 16 Jul 2004

Nicky and Tasha wake up and find there is a cassete player on the floor.Nicky presses play and out floated their mothers early morning voice and she bosses them about and ends up with hilareous mistakes. They go upstairs an find that their dad is still sleeping and they set the alarm.Lets see what results they get in Press Play.

I enjoyed the book because Nicky and Tasha get annoyed with little Joe their baby brother. The best part about Press Play is where their mum bosses them about to do things and also the funny parts so it makes it a good book for kids to read.

I would reccomend that the book is for 8-12 years to have some fun.
