Product Description

Product Description

An informative guide for anyone contemplating a career in medicine.

  • Up–to–date, essential information for a wide group of school leavers
  • Covers getting to medical school, being there and life thereafter
  • Written by newly qualified doctors who lecture on medical careers

From the Author

A study conducted in the UK in 1990 into the insight of first-year medical students about their future career and working conditions, revealed an almost total lack of knowledge about the profession into which they had just made a lifelong commitment. Many medical students regret their choice, with significant numbers leaving medical school or subsequently changing career after graduating. Indeed a study in 1998 of young Finnish doctors showed that 22% of respondents would not enter medicine again. It is astounding that intelligent students will apply for a course about which they know very little. We suspect this is due to the paucity of unbiased and comprehensive sources of information. This book will fill this void, allowing potential medical students to educate themselves and make an informed decision about which careers they intend to follow.
The reader will be able to make an educated and informed decision. They will also understand how the application procedure works, how to choose between the different universities, how to take a Year Out and more information that is vital. It will carry the candidate through life at university and into their chosen career. We suspect that the information provided would also significantly improve a potential candidates chance of making a successful application.
• Unbiased, comprehensive information with a clear logical layout.
• Up to date information regarding the change in curriculum and Doctors’ working practices.
• Personal Views for most chapters enabling "real life" stories to be shared.
• Reference to be used throughout university life and beyond.
• All the information in one small volume.
• Written by Junior Doctors who have experienced first hand the changes in the modern NHS. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book, 6 Feb 2008
This is a great book, I have read different editions of this book and I am pleased to say that they ARE up to date on probably everything- I made all my Uni choices based mainly on the info given in this book- a word of caution in doing this however would be that- University entry requirement change a lot- so by the time the book comes out, the requirement mentioned in the book are usually out of date- but that is not the case just in this book, but all of the same kind. A must read for future applicants- thus the reason for the 5.
