Product Description

Review

“A lover of philosophical ideas and practiced debunker of intellectual sham, Martin Cohen knocks some thirty important philosophers from Socrates to Derrida off their pedestals, and presents in a series of philosophical tales various aspects of their thought, life and personality which few of us ever suspected.” – Zenon Stavrinides, University of Bradford<!––end––>

"Philosophical Tales is highly recommended, not only for debutants but also for the cognoscenti who will find much here both amusing and stimulating." The Philosopher

Product Description

Enlightening and entertaining, Philosophical Tales examines a few of the fascinating biographical details of history’s greatest philosophers (alas, mostly men) and highlights their contributions to the field. By applying the true philosophical approach to philosophy itself, the text provides us with a refreshing ′alternative history′ of philosophy.

  • Opens up new philosophical debate by applying the true philosophical approach to philosophy itself

  • Provides summaries of the most celebrated and philosophically interesting tales, their backgrounds, and assessments of the leading players
  • Explores philosophers and schools of thought in one key philosophical text to supply a solid grounding in philosophical ideas and individuals
  • Shakes some of the foundations of philosophy with the aim of encouraging the reinvigoration of philosophy itself

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating pot pourri of philosophical trivia that adds up to something rather more, 9 Aug 2008
I was encouraged to write this review after seeing the psudonymous reviewer J Hamilton's splenetic review criticising this innovative, and totally original book over .... a series of copy-editor type flaws, such as mistating the year of the conference in Paris that Russell met Peano, and the year of Russell's book (1912, indeed not 1911 - whoops!) ... But J makes his most 'significant' criticism that of whether or not Wittgenstein called the nuclear disarmament movement the 'scum of the intellectuals' or not, as he says CND did not exist at the time. Well, there, I am pleased to say I can provide the link that is missing for J: Wittgenstein wrote a nasty piece in ' Culture and Value' in
1946 (pp. 48-9) which says amongst other things:

"The hysterical fear over the atom bomb being experienced, or at any rate expressed, by the public almost suggests that at last something really salutary has been invented. The fright at least gives the impression of a really effective bitter medicine. I can't help thinking: If this didn't have something good about it the philistines wouldn't be making an outcry. But perhaps this too is a childish idea. Because really all I can mean is that the bomb offers a prospect of the end, the destruction, of an evil, - our disgusting soapy water science]. And certainly that's not an unpleasant thought, but who can say what would come after this destruction? The people making speeches against producing the bomb are undoubtedly the scum of the intellectuals, but even that does not prove beyond question that what they abominate is to be welcomed..."

As Cohen points out, Wittgenstein is widely cited as 'the greatest philosopher of the Twentieth century', yet his philosophical views are unoriginal and his political ones repugnant. Cohen is to be thanked for highlighting this along with some twenty of so other utterly gripping and eye-opening stories!

(Even if the odd date slipped him by...)

And that picture of Spinoza is brilliant too...
