Product Description

Product Description

The Worst Jobs in History takes you back to the days when being a kid was no excuse for getting out of hard labour. This book tells the stories of all the children whose work fed the nation, kept trains running, and put clothes on everyone’s backs, over the last few hundred years of Britain’s history. No longer will you have to listen to your parents, grandparents, uncles, neighbours, and random old people in the Co-op telling you how much harder they had it in their young day. Next time you find yourself in that situation, ask them if they were a jigger-turner or a turnip-picker in their young day. No? An orderly boy, perhaps? A stepper? Maybe they spent their weekends making matchboxes? Still no? Then they have no idea about the real meaning of hard work. Tony Robinson takes you on a guided tour through all the lousiest places for a kid to work. With profiles and testimonies of real kids in rotten jobs, this book will tell you things you probably didn’t want to know about the back-breaking, puke-inducing bits of being a child in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really great book, 23 Nov 2005

This book is a really good read from cover to cover. Whilst it is written primarily for children, it appeals to all ages. It makes learning about historical children's jobs really fun. Each job has a 'Job Score' which summarises how awful the job was. Some really fascinating asides, which really give a fuller background. A very well-worth present for children and adults alike. A real bargin and good find if you ask me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alice's book review Prep III T (Mrs Thayer's class in Letchworth), 22 May 2007
If you like gruesome history and realise how lucky we are today then buy this book by Tony Robinson.
This amazing book is ever so hysterical. It will
keep you laughing for the whole day. My favourite part was the bleeding tooth fairy. Can you believe that people pulled their tooth out even before pain killers were invented. This book is full of the terrible jobs children had to do. Boys would love this book because it is very grose.
Everyone buy this fantastic book sells out. I will buy more of
Tony Robinson's books. Well did you know that even grownups messed around. They would fart in front of the Queen.. how enbarassing. If you made him laugh so much he would give you a peace of land! However do not try it in front of the headteacher I warn you! Buy it now or miss out!
