Product Description

Product Description

Mabel loves to play with her friends Nigel and George. Then one day she suspects that they have been stealing her flowers and, furious, she builds a wall round her garden to keep them out. Even the sun can’t get in, and inside the wall, Mabel grows lonely and sad and the flowers start to die. But Nigel and George are determined to show Mabel that if only she takes down the wall, they can all enjoy a whole meadow of flowers together. A joyful tale about friendship and the rewards of sharing, by a major new writing and illustrating talent.

About the Author

Paula Metcalf made her mind up to be an author and illustrator at the tender age of sixteen. She was commended in the Macmillan Prize for Illustration in 2003, after graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Illustration and an MA in Children’s Illustration from Anglia Polytechnic University. Her graceful, beautifully lit artwork is influenced by dance and Eastern European fairy tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly Written Childrens Tale!, 18 May 2005
This review is from: Mabel's Magical Garden (Hardcover)
I must say its been a while since I have read a childrens tale, but this is one of the best I have ever read by far. My nephews are getting this for their birthdays and I am looking forward to the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful tale with lovely illustrations, 15 Oct 2006

This book absolutely charmed my daughter. She especially loved that Mabel had a strop when she thought her friends had stolen her flowers! The colours of the illustrations are appealing to the eye, simple but detailed enough for my daughter to notice things like Mabel not wearing shoes and the little bird sitting on her head. It makes an excellent bedtime book as it ends with a beautiful sunset. I could, and have, read it a hundred times and still enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book, even for the very young, 29 May 2008

My son was only 2 when we borrowed this book from our local library and, though we borrowed about 7 others along with it, it was the only one he asked to have read again and again, night after night. He loved the kindness of Mabel and her friends and really wanted to know why she built the wall around her garden if her friends wanted to enjoy her flowers too. It is a very lovely book and I would recommend it to anyone whose child or a child they know has a kind, sharing kind of soul, male or female.
