Product Description

Product Description

Thomas's strictly religious father rules the house with his fists and insists the family live according to the Bible. But Thomas has an escape route - he sees incredible things that no one else notices - like tropical fish swimming in the canal and frogs leaping through the letterbox. Now he's recording his observations in a notebook, The Book of Everything, where he also writes down his biggest ambition: to be happy. But will that ever be possible with Father around?

Then Thomas meets Mrs Van Amersfoot, a woman full of rebellious spirit who recognises something similar in her new young friend. And in the fight against his father, Thomas's uniqueness - and the extraordinary power of his imagination - are the biggest weapons he has...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant little book!, 21 April 2006
By charlottestar (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews

Thomas is a little boy who sees things which no-one else can(tropical fish in the canal, hailstorms etc) He is also a little boy with a troubled homelife. A tyrannical, violent and religious father makes him afraid and rules over his mother, his sister and himself. It is only when Thomas meets the 'witch' next door Mrs van Amersfoort that he begins to learn that he does not have to be afraid anymore, that there are others who feel the same way he does and there are other people who will help him.

Its a strange little book at times, and has an almost dream like quality in places but this makes it all the more readable and interesting. Thomas is instantly likeable and his dream like visions begin to feel perfectly understandable in the face of his homelife. In the end the father is defeated by the women and the children around him. Thomas is no longer afraid and you feel like cheering because you know he WILL be happy when he grows up.

Great little book. Well worth it!
