Unsettling, erudite, dark, shot through with unexpected humour. Ambergris is one of my favourite haunts in fiction' CHINA MIEVILLE, author of Perdido Street Station

5.0 out of 5 stars Another encounter with the convincing other-world of Ambergris, 15 Feb 2007
By A Reader (North West England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shriek: An Afterword (Paperback)
Janice Shriek - an erstwhile artist's agent and gallery owner and sister of Duncan - has written a memoir. This is subsequently found by her brother and the interaction of the siblings - through his annotation of her memoir - forms basis of this unsettling and thrilling book. It is an unusual form and I enjoyed it immensely.

This is a welcome addition to the highly realised mythology of the city of Ambergris (which VanderMeer has already described in his anthology of short stories CITY OF SAINTS AND MADMEN). The city is infected with a colony of fungal creatures called Gray Caps. The effect of this species on the city mirrors much in our own civilisation and Vandermeer uses them as an analogy to pursue themes such as underclass, colonialism, and the belief and dogged pursuit of ideals.

I found the last part of the book particularly moving because it deals with the destruction of a city. The descriptions are so involving I found it difficult to surface. This book is a fine and utterly convincing escape to another world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Can't Stand Mushrooms!, 28 Sep 2006
By E. Patrick "Pilotsurfer" (Tiree, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The sadest thing I believe for such great writers as Vandermeer, Mieville, Roberts etc. is that they rarely get the recognition they deserve in the wider literary world because they are sci-fi/fantasy writers. Mr Vandermeer's words are a joy to read and tell a fantastic story, ever since I was wee I hated mushrooms but now I am also more than a little scared of them! This is a fantastic book! Set in the same city as 'Veniss Underground' (5-stars too!) Shriek explores a much younger city of rambling steam machines, hard-core publishing houses and only-half believed in creepy fungi-guys quietly waiting underground to take back their city!

1.0 out of 5 stars DIFFICULT, 4 Feb 2008
By D. ASTON - See all my reviews

This review is from: Shriek: An Afterword (Paperback)
It's very, very rarely that I give up on a book but I have to admit that I only made it a third of the way through. Despite enjoying his other books I found this one to be going nowhere and uninteresting. I can only guess at the rest of the quoted review that said "ultimately rewarding". I did lend it to a friend who struggled through to the end but found the experience unrewarding.
