Product Description

Product Description

An orphan and a bastard, Jamie Sommers grew up knowing he had no hope of heaven. Conceived in adultery and born in sin, Jamie was destined to repeat the sins of his parents - or so the nuns told him...And he proved them right.

Taking to sea, Jamie sought out danger and adventure in exotic ports all over the world as a smuggler, gunrunner - and murderer. Tough enough to handle anything, he's survived foreign prisons, pirates, and a shark attack. But in the quiet seaside town of Hawkes Harbor in Delaware, Jamie discovers something that is enough to drive him insane - and change his life forever. For it is in Hawkes Harbor that Jamie comes face to face with the ultimate evil...

'A rousing read...This is a contemporary Treasure Island with a genre-bending twist' Publishers Weekly

1.0 out of 5 stars Who let this through?, 22 Sep 2007

This review is from: Hawkes Harbor (Paperback)
What a strange book.

The first part purports to be a sinister, dark tale, as the main character battles for sanity in a mental home, haunted by past events. So far, so reasonable.

However, within fifty pages, the whole book has completely flipped. In the unlikely possibility that you might wish to mistakenly read this book, I won't say what happens. Suffice it to say, it is literally two different books in the space of a few pages, for no accountable reason. The change is laughable, pointless, lacks credibility, and removes any reason for continuing to read.

I presume the author's previous success (albeit some time ago) got this published. There is no earthly reason for it other than that. What manner of publisher and editor exists, who would allow such an effort through? It demeans previous work, and represents astonishingly poor value for money.

1.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment, 5 Mar 2006
By S. Rutherford "steverutherford" (London) - See all my reviews

Having read all of SE Hinton's book as a teenager I was very excited to see a new novel for adults. Unfortunately it was a huge let down. The story is incoherant and the characters are underdeveloped. By the end, I had no empathy at all with the main character. In short, don't waste your time and money.
