About the Author
Elizabeth Laird has been nominated four times for the Carnegie Medal and has won both the Smarties Prize and the Children's Book Award. She and her husband divide their time between Surrey and Edinburgh.

This book is about the incredible life of a boy called John Barr with his father, Patrick Barr. It is set in the Napoleonic times, when England and France were at war with each other.
In certain circumstances, the Barrs are stripped from there country home, falsely accused of murder and are forced to go on the run.
Someone is determined to get something from them. Bad things keep coming as they are forced to go to the navy. But they get separated. Patrick Barr goes to the HMS Splendid and John Barr to the HMS Fearless, one of the most feared ships of the seas. John joins the gunning crew as the lowest of the low, a powder monkey.
But when John and his best friend Kit are stuck behind enemy lines, what are they supposed to do?

This book is very good because it is very descriptive; it was as if Elizabeth Laird was on the ship! She can show someone's emotions with ease and can really draw you into the book and get you hooked so you want to read until the end. This can be a thriller at times and make you very tense, but it can also be very calm and at times sad and emotional.
This book is very good but the only problem with it is that it didn't have a real story line to it; it strayed off a couple of times and there was no particular main action part to it. But otherwise, a great read and I would recommend it to any one eleven or over as the language can sometimes be quite difficult.

I have NEVER seen my kids so thrilled by a book as this one. My fourteen year old daughter read it in a kind of fever, and made her (never reads books) best friend read it so that they could talk about it. Now my son (10) has just read it and said, glowing, "It's like pirates of the carribean for kids".

I loved this book. It kept me reading RIGHT to the end. Life so perfectly portrayed and certainly not just the oh! so happy parts either. A wonderful book with many many brilliant ideas.
