Product Description

Synopsis
Peter Childs offers accessible analyses of the work of twelve prominent writers, including Martin Amis, Pat Barker, Zadie Smith and Jeanette Winterson. Focussing on their most-studied writings, Childs develops new readings of these authors' key novels, while the introduction explains the dominant concerns of British fiction from 1970-2003, the period's historical context, and the 'state of fiction' at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 14 Dec 2008
After an introduction, this paperback book, which is 287 pages long, focuses on the work of twelve writers.

These are:

1 Martin Amis
2 Par Barker
3 Julian Barnes
4 Angela Carter
5 Kazuo Ishiguro
6 Hanif Kureishi
7 Ian McEwan
8 Salman Rushdie
9 Zadie Smith
10 Graham Swift
11 Irvine Welsh
12 Jeanette Winterson

The book then rounds off with a conclusion and an index.

Each chapter gives biographical details about an author together with outlines of all their major novels and a brief mention of any other work that they may have produced e.g. short stories, poems, plays, journalism, film scripts and non-fiction writing. A good outline is given of the all the novels by a particular author and the more reknown works are then discussed at greater length. Mr Childs discusses the main themes of an author, their intellectual interests, other literary influences, political and religious views where known and other critical approaches where relevant e.g race, gender, class, sexuality and so on.

I found that this was an enjoyable read and a good introduction to the work of twelve contemporary novelists.
