Product Description

Synopsis
Information technology has become an increasingly important part of counselling and psychotherapy. This text, with contributions from internationally leading figures, provides an up-to-the-minute, precise and practical guide to the different ways in which technology can be used in therapeutic work, including e-mail and Internet relay chat, telephone, video-link and stand-alone software packages. As well as discussing vital ethical, theoretical and practical considerations for practitioners, the authors look at the likely impact of these technologies on therapeutic relationships and the outcomes that can be expected. Technology's impact is explored from the perspectives of both therapists and clients, including individual therapy, groups, supervision and training, and supported by extensive case studies.

First Sentence
The use of technology in counselling and psychotherapy is changing the face of the profession, with practitioners either being challenged and excited by the new opportunities it presents or feeling sceptical, overwhelmed or even frightened by an unwelcome intrusion into traditional methods of providing mental health services. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Good topic, thin on content, 29 April 2009
By Mr. N. James (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In the interest of adding e-counselling to my practice, I purchased this book with enthusiasm. I found it disappointing mainly in that the content of it that was directly applicable to myself as a practitioner was minimal. The range of subjects covered (from online clinical supervision to computer-based CBT) is so broad it isn't likely to all (or mostly) be of interest to the any one reader. I felt that additional content on case studies of online counselling and actual clinical material would have deepened the book significantly. The subtitle 'A Practitioner's Guide' is inaccurate.
