Product Description

Review
""AIDS in the 21st Century" is the single best introduction to the global pandemic and its consequences. It is clear, thorough, and authoritative. Because AIDS is transforming not just public health but whole societies around the world, this is a must-read for policy-makers, scientists, and the general public." -- Craig Calhoun, President, Social Science Research Council
.,."the foundation text for postgraduate courses in AIDS and development, AIDS and politics, and so on."--Alex de Waal, "London Review of Books"
.,."compelling, persuasive, very readable and informative." --Dr. Bill Rau, Board of Directors, Africa Policy Information Center
""AIDS in the Twenty-First Century: Disease and Globalisation" is a unique and important book. It is accessible, innovative and far-sighted. This is the most important recent book to understand the unfolding longterm consequences of AIDS in Africa. But it is also about the need for a new world order." -- Peter Piot, Executive Director UNAIDS
"This is a powerful book which needs to be read by all senior African politicians and policy makers. It is honest about the scale of the pandemic and the problems we face in addressing it but there is a real message of hope. We can beat this disease." - KY Amoako, Executive Secretary, Economic Commission for Africa
"The text is well-written...[and] impressively clear even on complex scientific issues..."--Shula Marks, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London
"This book should be read by every businessman, not only in Africa, throughout the world--because it uncovers in new and more meaningful ways the terrifying global, social and economic impact ofHIV/AIDS..."--"African Business"

London Review of Books, 19th June, 2003
...the best reference book for those who are - or should be - grappling with the implications of the situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, 13 May 2003
The best book I've read on the subject of AIDS. The authors approach the subject from a pragmatic and proactive perspective, showing how the epidemic has highlighted social, economic and political challenges in the developing world, and providing input on possible solutions. The search for a cure for AIDS is only part of the challenge. This book is extremely well researched and referenced, unbiased and not afraid to state facts as they are. AIDS is much more than a set of diseases, it is a wake up call to the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars aids in the twenty-first century: disease and globilization, 4 Aug 2003
By pingu (i.o.m. u.k.) - See all my reviews
a very powerfull book, it makes you think beyond the disease and look at the causes and effects. well rounded and easy to read this book is full of facts that are well presented in a format that the "layman" can enjoy. it makes a subject that is far removed from our life and often depressing hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for anyone interested in Third World Development, 13 Mar 2006
By Miss S Peiris (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I am doing a course on HIV/AIDS and Development as part of my University Degree, and this was one of the core texts given on our reading list. It's easy to see why- It offers you a new more sociological dimension from which to look at the issue of AIDS. It also links AIDS to the core development debate- and communicates more then effectively, the implications and consequences that AIDS carries for "Third World" Development. It has now become impossible to discuss the issue of Development in the Third World, without discussing AIDS. And so, this book becomes doubly important.
