Product Description

From the Publisher

Georgette Heyer's brilliant and highly acclaimed series of detective novels, now in a handsome new package --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

A moonlit night. A sleeping village. And an unaccountable murder…

An English bobbie returning from night patrol finds a corpse in evening dress locked in the stocks on the village green. He identifies the body immediately. Andrew Vereker was not a well-loved man, and narrowing down the suspects is not going to be an easy job. The Vereker family are corrupt and eccentric –and hardly cooperative …

It’s another case for the resourceful Superintendent Hannasyde, who sets off on the trail of a killer so cunning that even his consummate powers of detection are tested to their limits…

'Death in the Stocks is that rare and refreshing thing - a clever problem stated, developed and finally solved in terms of character' The Times

'Miss Heyer's characters act and speak with an ease that is as refreshing as it is rare in the ordinary mystery novel' Times Literary Supplement

4.0 out of 5 stars Murder in the Stocks, 8 Mar 2007
This review is from: Death in the Stocks (Paperback)
Unusually for Georgette Heyer, this mystery isn't set in the country but in London, chiefly at the flat of the distinctly unusual Verekers. They are surprisingly matter of fact about the murder of their rich relative, and neither their fiancés nor the police know what to make of either of them. Luckily for the sorely-tried Superintendent Hannasyde, the levelled-headed Giles Carrington is willing to help him out. I failed to guess this one, and felt a bit of an idiot when the solution was revealed. Enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars The man in the stocks looked drunk - but he was dead!, 6 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Death in the Stocks (Paperback)
In a quiet English village, a policeman doesn't expect to find a man in the stocks - especially if the man in question is dead!

Arnold Vereker has a weekend cottage near the village, which he often visits with lady friends, but the young lady in residence this weekend turns out to be his step-sister, Antonia. She has some explaining to do when the police arrive to find her drying her bloodstained skirt. Fortunately, her cousin, Giles, is a solicitor, and can be relied upon to come to her rescue - and, as this is a Georgette Heyer novel, you won't be surprised to find that there's a hint of romance going on.

In the meantime, who killed Arnold? Could it have been Antonia, or her brother, Kenneth? Their faithful maid? At least it couldn't have been Arnold's brother, Roger, because he was dead - wasn't he?

Georgette Heyer does manage to make her characters witty and endearing, and you will enjoy the romp through this novel. I didn't guess "whodunnit" - maybe you'll have better luck!
