5.0 out of 5 stars An American Dickens, 16 Sep 2007
By T. Barr (Coleraine, N. Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was attracted to this author's 'Handling Sin' by the five star reader recommendations and was not disappointed. Then I read the Savile/Magnum crime trilogy and loved those, so I thought I would try this early novel of Malone's. It is a marvellous, funny (at times laugh out loud so), yet touching story, peopled by larger than life characters in the tradition of Dickens. The description of the production of 'Hedda Gabler' calls to mind Dicken's telling of an enaction of 'Hamlet' in Great Expectations' - you don't have to like Dickens, however, to appreciate this.
It is of its time in its examination of the American psyche (the Vietnam War, the assassination of the Kennedys) but none the worse for that. When I finished reading this I felt as though I was saying goodbye to old friends - read this; you will love it!
