1.0 out of 5 stars More dominance based rubbish, 1 Oct 2009
Why do these books based on dominance appeal to people? There is absolutely no rational basis for the concept of human-dog pack-like dominance relationships. In fact, the only solid evidence is against it or indicates that this approach has negative effects on obedience and behaviour problems. The reason why people like to use a dominance approach is because we have a culture of punishment and hierarchy. A dog does something wrong, so we punish that behaviour. The dog keeps doing something wrong, so we assume it does not respect us. This is nonsense. Look at it this way...dogs don't understand human behaviour or language, they have to learn about them. This means that we need to focus on teaching the dog to understand us, in the same way we would teach our language to someone from a foreign country. That doesn't involve domination. Most behaviour problems start with a lack of communication. The amazing thing is that dogs are expected to learn human communication with almost no guidance...even though they are supposed to be the less intelligent member of the partnership. Forget the dominance stuff, think about communication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should read this book before getting a dog, 10 Jul 2009

(REAL NAME)
Very good book to read to understand how to interact with your dog but not so informative for puppies eventhough they have a book on puppies too.
