4.0 out of 5 stars Cracker, 20 July 2009
By Gareth Wilson "drosdelnoch2" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
As a fan of the original novel by Karen, I really couldn't wait to get this novel, so when it landed I set myself up for a wonderful day of reading pleasure. What unfurled was a tale that not only explored the world that the characters inhabit a bit deeper but went on to expose the seedier side of things as this Fantasy Crime novel exposed the hidden truths behind the ruthlessness that people are prepared to go to in order to make a few dollars more. Add to the mix (and lets face it with cakes involved there is a mix,) a book that's not afraid to laugh at itself and you've got a story that's light hearted and an easy read with a fistful of twists that will keep you guessing. Its great fun and if I get my way I want Reg the owl to get a tale at some point about her life. She's an absolute cracker and demonstrates that even supporting characters are as magical as the leads.

2.0 out of 5 stars Below average, 17 Aug 2009
K. E. Mills' (Karen Miller) Witches Incorporated continues the adventures of Gerald and Co. begun in Rogue Agent. The book follows Gerald as he starts his first official assignment as a Janitor. Meanwhile, Melissande, Reg and Bibbi (Monk's sister) have setup a witching agency, a one-stop-shop to solve magical problems.

My main problem with this book, and the series in general, is that it has a lot of potential but sadly falls quite short of the mark. The premise of a lacklustre wizard with a newly discovered wealth of power could have been explored in more detail, however instead Gerald was pushed to the sidelines to make way for, what is essentially, Loose Women: the novelisation.

This is no exaggeration, much of the book is taken up with the bitching and arguing between Melissande, Reg and Bibbi. Although Bibbi has a more interesting character, Reg and Melissande sound increasingly like 50 year old housewives going at it over tea and crumpets.

Another problem with the series is the language used. The books are supposed to be set in a fictional world with countries like 'Ottosland'. However, the language used by the characters constantly makes you believe they are wandering around London with words like "quid", "mate" and "cheers".

The book is almost saved from complete scrappage by the rare appearances of Gerald and Monk. The series has a planned third book and would do well to focus more on the supposed protaganist Gerald and less on the old wives club.

In short, nothing much happens. If you want a good page turner within the same genre try Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good clean fun, 3 Aug 2009
By Peter Miller (Sudbury, Suffolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

THis is the second in the series of books by KE Mills. IT is lighthearted and humorous but with a good and quite convoluted story.
The main characters are all likeable, I am particularly like Rex, an ancient princess who has been changed into a bird and is the heroes companion and side kick. She is nearly as cynical as I am.
If I have one criticism it is that there is an awful lot of talk and argument between the characters, I would like a little more action.
I am looking forward to the third in the series.

I really enjoyed this book, it kept me amused and entertained BUT the print was so small and rather faint that I couldn't read it for too long at a time.
