Product Description

Synopsis

This title presented in Mp3 CD Format. Count Hamnet Thyssen is a minor noble of the drowsy old Raumsdalian Empire. Its capital city, Nidaros, began as a mammoth hunters' camp at the edge of the great Glacier. But, that was centuries ago, and as everyone knows, it's the nature of the great Glacier to withdraw a few feet every year. Now, Nidaros is an old and many-spired city; and though they still feel the breath of the great Glacier in every winter's winds, the ice cap itself has retreated beyond the horizon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Duller than usual......., 14 Dec 2008
By Zak (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Having read and enjoyed many Harry Turtledove novels I knew what to expect. Good story. Lots of flannel. This offering however did not disappoint except on the matter of scale - a passable story and bales and bales of flannel.

As usual, Turtledove feels the need to repeat explanations of every mundane detail of the plot every few dozen pages as if we may have forgotten what we read ten minutes previously. The constant repetition of the phrase " (character name's) shiver had nothing to do with the wind/ice/snow etc...." every couple of chapters just smacks of lazyness. (Epic poets such as Homer working in the oral tradition could get away with repetetive phrasing as a storytelling trick, but if this what Mr Turtledove was trying to do..........it didn't work.)

I have enjoyed many previous books - particularly the Misplaced Legion series, despite the laboured writing style but this really is a new low.
The plot is almost non-existent - they go North, return South, go North again, book stops; and as for the terrible Mills and Boon romance flannel around the main character's unpleasant ex-wife which makes up the main bulk of the book - this could have been straight out of a Radio 4 Afternoon Play (yes, that bad!).

He has created a wonderful world in which to set a series of novels but I don't think I have the stamina to wade through another similar book just to discover what happens at the end.
