5.0 out of 5 stars A gently inspiring book about facilitative leadership, 23 May 2003
By John Armstrong (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Servant Leader (Hardcover)
This excellent portrayal of servant leadership is interlaced with anecdotes about James Autry's time both as head of coporations and as management consultant, guide and friend to industry leaders. This is about 'gentleman' leadership - caring, supportive but firm; paying real attention to human needs within a context of corporate health and well-being.

The style of the book is in some ways old-fashioned, without the gimmickry of 'Seven Habits of Successful....' But I found it thoughtful and genuine, capturing the essence of a better way to replace the old control and command style of leadership. There are many useful tips and insights that reflect on life today - for instance on the difference between management and leadership, or into the limitations of the new communication technologies such as e-mail (strong on data exchange, lousy at communication).

The best aspect of this book for me was that it explodes the myth that servant leadership is weak leadership. What is clear is that behind James Autry's human-centred approach is a will and a value set that is rock-solid. At the core of these is a fundamental belief in each person's potential for emancipation through taking responsibility for their lives. An inspiring read.
