5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocking the Secrets to the U.S. Book Market, 11 Feb 2009
By Erich Hoyt (North Berwick, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was the first guide for prospective and experienced authors that really unlocked the secrets of how to approach and get your ideas considered by editors and agents. It worked by providing mini-bios of editors and agents interviewing them to find out their preferences and revealing their interests. Being able to target the right editor with your idea is the first step in getting your material considered for publication. Other writers' guides have since picked up on this idea, but Jeff Herman's guide is still the best one around. Of course, not all publishing houses cooperate in providing access, and in some cases it may be that Jeff Herman's approach has made it more difficult for authors targeting certain editors and agents. Still, I can't imagine pitching a new book idea in the world's largest market for English-language books without having this book as a primary point of reference. Highly, highly recommended.
-- Erich Hoyt (author of The Earth Dwellers, Creatures of the Deep, Orca: The Whale Called Killer and other books)
