5.0 out of 5 stars Truly exceptional, 19 Mar 2009
By Steve Craftman "rottweilsteve" (North Powys) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Normally I'm not too keen on collage/Photoshopped decks, but this Tarot is truly exceptional. Patric Stillman has produced a deck from a Radical Faerie point of view: it is, to say the least, iconoclastic. Dare I say it's as revolutionary for gay men as the Motherpeace deck was for women...

Some cards are recognisable as being informed by the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (Two of Swords is especially striking), while others are completely re-interpreted: the satyr on the front of the box is taken from The Moon. The Three of Swords shows a disconsolate man defacing a three pointed Celtic knot (ie a heart) carved on a tree: a dramatic re-interpretation of the Rider-Waite-Smith triple-pierced heart.

The general approach in the design of the deck is to take what works, leave behind what doesn't, and most importantly, show the emotions involved. In all, fifteen men, including the author, play every role in the deck. Which, of course, means that we're faced with a male High Priestess, a male Empress and so on. Although the characters in a few cards wear a little make-up, most notably to my eyes the High Priestess, there is no doubt that the men portraying traditionally female images are men. We're not talking drag or female impersonation here. Nor are the men uniformly young and beautiful: there is a wide range of age and appearance. What these men have in common is their belief in the project: it shines from these cards.

I have but one disappointment with the deck itself, which is that I like the pip cards to show the appropriate number of swords, cups, wands or disks, which doesn't happen here. Although the deck doesn't come with a Little White Book (it`s available as a PDF file), there is available the Brotherhood Tarot Companion, which you really ought to buy in conjunction with this deck.

In short, no gay man who reads Tarot should be without this deck - and bear in mind that it's a limited edition!
