Review

"THE HEAP is a riveting thriller...clever, thoughtful and provocative. Albarelli is a name to watch, a sly storyteller who will keep you turning pages late into the night." -- JACK O'CONNELL, author of BOX NINE and WORD MADE FLESH. "Albarelli's book is an intelligent thriller that blends history, religion, and current events into a very provocative, moving and timely story." -- LEN COLODNY, author of New York Times bestseller, SILENT COUP. "Mixing centuries of mystery and intrigue, Albarelli weaves a chilling, stunningly cinematic story with street children at the heart of the action. The author fleshes out fascinating characters drawn from Biblical and Apocryphal literature, as well as Christian mystics and 'heretics' from the Middle ages. THE HEAP will stick with you long after the last page." -- ELIZABETH BLACK, author of BUFFALO SPIRITS. "Albarelli has given us a mystical tale of hope and humanity amid savage brutality...a haunting allegory as old as history itself. THE HEAP is at once a mesmerizing literary carniva...surreal, seductive and wicked...and an introspective yearning for something higher." -- SUSAN EDWARDS, senior editor, WEEKLY PLANET. "Albarelli braids politics, religion, history and fantasy in such novel ways, you'll read THE HEAP with urgency...and be sorry when it's over." -- CARLO WOLFF, freelance book critic to The Boston Globe and San Francisco Chronicle.

Product Description

This is a mesmerising novel that opens with a priest fleeing shadowy pursuers. In his flight, he leaves behind a journal in a London flat. The journal contains the remarkable story of a group of street children who have established an egalitarian community in a large rubbish heap and tells what happens after they make a startling discovery that could radically alter the course of history. 'The Heap' is a timely tale of suspense, dark comedy, secret turns of awareness and stunning coincidences. It is a book that challenges readers' notions of moral certainty while dragging them dangerously close to the abyss of ethical ambiguity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Controversial, Intelligent Thriller That Provokes Thinking, 11 Aug 2005
I found this book to be alarmingly loaded with all sorts of subtle issues that consistently gave me pause to think. It isn't often that I enjoy going back to previous pages read to gleen more and to reinterpert themes. The book, very well written, defies a lot of conventional style rules and moves its plot and story by weaving throughout amazing bits of history, religion, myth, and politics.

That THE HEAP is becoming controversial in the U.S. is entirely understandable: read the book closely, re-arrange a number of the proper names and location titles and what you have is essentially a surrelaistic retelling of the troubled road to the doomed-to-fail Iraq war. This is very crafty and thoughtful storytelling. Five stars plus a universe of praise for literary honesty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, 27 April 2005
I loved this book. The character Pockets was so real, as were all the other children. And the story just amazed me. Is this book true? Does anyone know? I'm going to give it to my friends to read, but only if they promise to give it back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Fascinating Read, 28 Sep 2005
I could not put THE HEAP down once I began reading it; the book is fascinating! I especially enjoyed the way the author wove so many related stories, including that of the enigmatic Simon Magus, into the main tale. THE HEAP is not a conventional thriller; no, it is far more than that--- it is absolutely cinematic in parts and braids politics, religion, history and fantasy in novel ways. Highly recommended.
