5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 5 Jul 2005
By Mrs. E. R. Braun "elisabeth_rb" (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As you would expect from the Inspirations/Country Bumpkin publications, this book is marvellous and will have your fingers twitching for a needle and thread within minutes!
It starts with a stitch dictionary complete with several photos showing the stages of each stitch so that you feel you have actually watched a demonstration rather than being left to struggle with the hazy diagrams most stitch guides provide. The stitches are grouped into surface embroidery, padding and slip, wirework, needlelace and finally beading techniques.
The second part of the book comprises 20 designs covering all sorts of subjects from floral studies through small animals (I love the rabbit SO much!), birds and berries. Most of the materials needed are ordinary cottons, which makes a nice change from the books that use expensive, specialist stuff only. The more hard-to-find items in this book can easily be substituted by more available things without losing much from the design.
There are also many other example photos throughout the book which have come from the 'Inspirations' magazine.
On the strength of the quality of this book, I fully intend to buy more of the A-Z series. WELL worth having!

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent place to start, 12 Jul 2009

Produced to the same standard as other A-Z guides this book is a great starting point for the newcomer and intermediate needleworker. Very well illustrated with clear and understandable instructions. Makes a valuable addition to your library. Particularly like the way the publishers spiral bind these books so they lay flat easily when you are working from them.
