Singularity is a slam-bang first novel where the science is as important as the fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, genre-busting debut, 20 Feb 2006
By A Customer
I don’t usually go out of my way to recommend books. However this debut from author Bill DeSmedt deserves special attention and praise.

My brother had recommended it to me. He’s a physicist in the states, and described it as a “techno-thriller mixed with hard sci-fi”. His colleagues kept talking about finally discovering good fiction that also gets the science right (they even had to look up the forgotten Jackson-Ryan hypothesis that forms part of the plot). That was intriguing enough to give it a try.

It’s as fast paced as a typical Cussler or Clancy work, but with quantum mechanics, microscopic black holes, non-proliferation and Russian history as the underlying subjects – instead of the tired old list of plots you normally get. Plus the writing is much better – and far wittier – than usual, with characters that act and think like people in the real world. In fact, I think I’ve worked with (or hired) people just like Knox and Mycroft in the past.

It’s a bit hard to believe this is Mr. DeSmedt’s first book, and I would have suspected a pseudonym of a more established author if his photo wasn’t on the book jacket. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars well-written sci-fi with strong female lead character, 22 Jun 2008
i'm sick of sci-fi in which women exist - it at all - as arm candy. so full marks to bill de schmedt for writing what is not only a gripping read, with real science, but which also features a strong lead female character.

i can't wait for his next book, dualism, to be published!
