5.0 out of 5 stars High quality and impossible to put down for too long, 23 Sep 2005
It was curiosity that prompted me to order this book, as I had never heard of Faction Paradox before and I was rewarded with a riveting read. From chapter one the richness of writing, researching and detail make it impossible to put this book down. You are immersed so deeply that the imagination needs to fill in very few gaps to hear the sounds, feel the textures and experience the events contained within its pages. For this one book a week addict, I just wish this book would last for the rest of the year. I can honestly say this book is a reference point for its genre and highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warring States, 21 Sep 2007

'Warring States' focuses on the hunt for a mysterious jade casket in the midst of the Boxer Rebellion, complete with unkillable golem warriors, flying martial arts and time active powers. The novel's historical basis is rich, and the exotic setting and characters make this an enjoyable read, though it must be said that the build up of the mystery is slightly more enjoyable than the SF denoument. Still, this is a huge improvement on Halliday's bland 'History 101', and it's nice to see the Faction step out of the shadows and actually feature heavily in their own series. As the official Doctor Who novels have dumbed-down in recent years it's nice to see more ambitious works like this finding their place - good stuff.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing sci fi fantasy, 3 Jul 2007
By S. Bentley "stuarthoratiobentley" (North Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Unlike the majority of the Faction Paradox novels, Warring States is the only one to feature the Faction front and centre. Set at the end of the 19th century, the story tells the tale of a mysterious casket that appears to contain an incredible power source. The Chinese authorities want to keep hold of the casket, while a member of the Faction covets it. They clash, inevitably.

Mags Halliday is a fine writer, as evidenced by her Who novel History 101 and the setting rings authentic. The characters are well-drawn and likeable where they're meant to be. She has a good grip of humour and the mixture of science and fantasy. Her style flows and is highly readable and some of the concepts, although playing off pre-established elements of the FP universe, are mindbending, which is good.

If there is a failing of this book, it's that the story is built on the ending and I'm not sure that with the cat out of the bag, the story says a lot that will reward rereading. However, whilst reading I enjoyed it very much. (By the way, I meant to give it four stars.)
