Stages, 27 Mar 2003
OK most of you all are probably wondering what this book is all about. "Stages" is basically a look into the life of Britney without the hype or gloss that is usually used when cameras follow stars around in documentaries.Firstly, there is the book itself which is really bigger than i expected it to be, its bigger then Kylie's "La La La" book for example. The cover itself is really cool, I love the picture they used and it looks even better in real life especially with the size it is printed in. The book basically contains alot of captures of Britney Spears the performer in action during the second leg of her Dream A Little Dream tour in early to mid 2002. It shows you why she does what she does, basically because she is great at it. The pictures really do capture the essence of her performances and are in high quality colour, so are great to look at. As well as the performance pictures, there are shots of Britney travelling around Mexico to get to the next venue and also backstage photos. There are also exclusive black and white photoshoots for the book itself, showing Britney in her hotel room on her bed and by her window. Another great feature in this book is a full double page spread of her videos in chronoligical order (with minor exceptions) that basically take a few parts from her music videos and fill the page in the style of film-roll. I love looking at these the most, they show a real prgression from "...Baby One More Time" to "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" Finally in the book, there are passages written by Britney's family herself - such as her sister, cousin, best friend, mother and aunt, writing about how they see Britney. Britney writes in the book herself to and they are very personal pieces of writing trying to describe what the real Britney is like behind the image that she is perceived to be. Moving onto the DVD, I would say this is the true highlight of the package. At an hour long, there is a true chance for you to finally see for yourself what Britney is like, and what you find is that Britney is actually a really REALLY quiet and polite girl, and you would never tell that this same girl is the world's biggest superstar. Britney rarely taks directly to the camera so you really do feel like a fly on the wall, just watching what life is like on Britney's tour. One thing this DVD does is dispel of the rumours in the press that Britney threw a diva and walked off the stage halfway through her concert because she couldn't be bothered to perform. You see that she honestly really does try her best to make the show go on, but the circumstances just don't allow it to be possible. You'll have to watch it yourself to find out everything behind the decision, but the "Stages" DVD is a very insightful and rare look into Britney. Overall, I would say that this is a must-have for fans of Britney as a special sort of gift from her to you allowing you to get closer to the person behind the star you look up to. For non-Britney fans, it is perfect to watch the DVD and have all your impressions of Britney turned around, as you also see she is not a muppet controlled by the record company (just watch the press conference in the beginning for proof of that!).The DVD is not the type of thing to watch at a party or anything, you have to settle down and really concentrate and it will draw you in. There is no narrator or presenter guiding you and telling you what is going on, just raw footage from Mexico to your DVD player to see what really goes on behind the scenes. There are emotional scenes with Britney crying, happy scenes with her laughing and others where she is singing away sounding great showing she really loves what she does.
