5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide to top schools, 27 Aug 2002
By Adrian (Swindon) - See all my reviews
This book became an indispensable reference throughout the selection and application process for the top business schools. The fact that the authors were recent graduates, and have analysed in such detail the character, learning style and criteria for admission is tremendously useful when you yourself are trying to research the schools and establish your shortlist.
A couple of years ago I bought the Which MBA book - a pretty good general guide, but it doesn't even come close to the detail of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge - entire chapters dedicated to each school - Harvard, Wharton, LBS and the other top 10 schools. They go through all the essay questions with both good samples and analysis of what lies behind an efective, persuasive and personal answer.
All the schools end up asking you why you have applied to their school (one of the key questions), and you've got a lot more confidence to provide a solid answer. In fact, the book also helps you ask good questions of the alum, colleagues, HR directors and anyone else that you talk to as part of your research.
A really great book for anyone thinking of doing an MBA.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABC of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge, 14 Mar 2004
By A Customer
A superb book, I would wholeheartedly recommend reading this before considering applying to one of the top b-schools. Probably the best advice is not to rush into the application process, but plan and brand yourself as a top candidate. This book gives you targeted support in this exercise for each school, reading the thought processes behind essay questions helps develop your style in an application. It certainly helped mine to one of the schools (which I was subsequently admitted to).

If you haven't taken your GMAT, I would also wholeheartedly recommend Kaplan GMAT 800 (ISBN: 0743224345) as a source of hard GMAT questions. If you are applying to a top school the standard prep books (Kaplan,Princeton Review etc) do not challenge after a bit, while this one kept me scratching my head up until the GMAT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything a book can tell you about the top b-schools, 6 May 2003
By A Customer
The two great things about this book are i) it only focuses on a small number of schools (the top ones) & ii) each chapter is written by students from those schools. After reading this book & applying to a couple of the schools (& getting into one!) I can confirm that the impression you get from reading is very accurate. Some of the information, especially on subjects like the GMAT and references, gets repeated a number of times for each school, but all round this is an excellent overview of the top b-schools.
