classy but pricey, 22 Aug 2002
With a curvaceous Anita Ekberg on the cover, you will be forgiven for thinking this book is about Swedish blondes in Roman fountains, were it not for the bottle of whisky (actually an American Bourbon) displayed on a table in front of the voluptous actress. No, this book is about Single Malt Whisky, so the title says, although many of the beautiful pictures in the book are of anything but Single Malt Whiskies. Never mind. Umberto Angeloni, who, if not writing books on whisky, happens to be chairman of Brioni, the Italian fashion house which designs James Bond's prohibitevely expensive bespoke suits, makes it clear that "Italy and whisky gang thegither". This work is a tribute to the combination of Italy's dolce vita and the classiness of Single Malt Whisky. Among other things, Angeloni portraits five Italian whisky collectors (the world's largest collections of whisky are all in Italy). Perhaps the most intriguing one is about blind Valentino Zagatti who has amassed a collection of a staggering 4000 bottles. Needless to say, he knows every one of them just by feeling them with his hands. Since Italian bottlings of Scotch whiskies are becoming more and more sought after on the collectors' market, this book is a recommended read for anyone interested in the subject, were it not for its price tag: Angeloni's book costs the equivalent of two bottles of Single Malt Whisky and many collectors will choose to drink rather than to read about the spirit.
