This is a good read for anyone with a sense of adventure. It is a non-fiction account of life with the British Antarctic Survey that provides a surprising insight into the behaviours and experiences of a group of relatively young male scientists and support staff who are forced to live together in an remote and isolated environment for months at a time.

It has been written in a fairly unconventional style that adds to the authenicity of the narative and adds credibility to the, sometimes, bizzare, rituals at the base. The story provides comedy and tragedy but be warned about the language. This book is not for the easily offended.

I spent the last three winters at Faraday before it became Vernadsky, so have an obvious interest (thanks for flagging the book to me James). If you're an ex-Faradayan, this should be compulsory reading; if you're BAS (ex or not), you'll find it fun as a pre-nanny BAS story. If you're just interested, you won't be disappointed. This book gives a pretty good insight to what life was like as an over-winterer, although Len did have an extraordinarily hard time of it. Yes, the language is bad and if you are easily offended you are forewarned.
