4.0 out of 5 stars Great Creature Feature, 9 July 2008
By Smokey (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clickers (Paperback)
I thought Clickers was excellent. The book is supposed to have a B movie feel to it and it does. Fortunately some of the best horror movies I have seen have been B movies so I got right into it. The book is very fast paced with loads of action and I liked the charactors. I'm writing this after having read the sequel also which is another great book. Pick them both up

1.0 out of 5 stars Promised so much but gave so little, 16 Jun 2007
This review is from: Clickers (Paperback)
When I read the synopsis to this story it was interesting even if it read like a preview of a B movie - unfortunately that's exactly what it is. The story starts brightly enough, suspense and the occasional flash of horror.

The idea of killer crabs being hunted by something more ferocious and terrifying was a very good way of portraying what could have been an original story however too much name dropping and references to crap low budget horror movies (Creature from the Black Lagoon)allowed the story to descend into boredom.

For me Gonzales was still trying to develop characters in the final pages when the story should have been action and climatic. The reader doesn't discover were the crabs or the other creatures come from and to be honest I didn't really care. For the final 60 pages or so I only read part pages to skip to the end quicker. Mutated crabs and deep sea creatures are not as far fetched as a man having his chest ripped open and surviving long enough to make his peace before spluttering to death or a rocket launcher being fired in a confined space without causing devastating damage. Unconvincing.

The story packed potential but failed to deliver on all counts. A very disappointing read not to be repeated with Clickers 2.
