Jimi's dad sets the record straight. The co-author, Jas Obrecht, on Valentine's Day, 1999.
Ever since he helped bring Jimi into this world and accepted the responsibility of being a single parent, James "Al" Hendrix has struggled to do right by his son. As Al explains, "I began writing My Son Jimi after winning back Jimi's musical legacy in 1995 because it finally felt like he had come back home. I also wanted to get the story of his life straightened out before something happens to me. So many books about Jimi have come out over the years, and I knew none of them could come off properly because the authors didn't interview me or any of the family all that much.
"Writers who've never talked with Jimi or me don't know anything about his childhood, and his childhood had a whole lot of bearing on who he became. I just got so tired of seeing so much garbage and made-up stuff, I had to set the record straight. With this book, I want to let people know what Jimi was all about--where he came from, who his people were, and how we lived while he was growing up. This is his story, and it's coming direct from G.H.Q.--that's General Headquarters."
On the 25th anniversary of Jimi's death--to the day--Jimi's step-sister Janie called and asked me to help Al write his book. We started that weekend. On the second day of interviews, Al went into his bedroom and came out with an old archive box. Prying off the lid, he revealed a thick stack of Jimi's original artwork. "I've kept these all these years," Al said, "because I just couldn't bear to part with them. I was also hoping to one day put them in my book." Alongside Jimi's original sketches, pen-and-inks, and paintings, we've also included dozens of photos from the collections of Al, his mother Nora Hendrix, and Jimi himself.
After thirty years as a landscape gardener, 79-year-old Al Hendrix is now Chairman of the Board of Experience Hendrix. Jas Obrecht is Editor-in-Chief of "allmusic," a soon-to-be-launched Internet music magazine.
We hope you enjoy My Son Jimi!
