The Indispensable Guide for Four Wheelers in Moab, 7 Jan 2006
We bought this book to help us plan a one week trip to Moab using modified rental Jeeps. The book was great at giving us the information we needed to make the most of our limited time in what is now my favourite place on earth. The trail ratings are reasonably accurate along with the GPS coordinates. We used the book to plot all of the routes before we left the UK into our Garmin with the US Topo 24K National Parks West maps. We found ourselves frequently referring to the book along each trail as the topo maps don't have all of the trails in their entirety. One example was our trip to Tusher Tunnel which is probably impossible to find without the book as it's not on any map despite being waymarked with posts.By the time we left Moab the book's binding had broken and all the pages were loose. Hardly suprising considering the ride it had endured. This didn't bother me much as we will just buy another for our next trip. It's worthwhile taking some sticky tape with you for trail side repairs. Tip for pegging your trail ratings in the book (Easy, Moderate, Difficult): If you can drive in the UK safely without lockers or a winch in places where others need this equipment you will likely be capable of driving the (D) trails listed by difficulty from Kane Creek Canyon to Poison Spider Mesa in a typical modified rental with 33" tyres and open diffs.
