4.0 out of 5 stars I agree with the other reviews, but....., 15 Oct 1999
By A. J. Holden (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book contains lots of good info, IF you want to cruise on a fully equipped, fibreglass, Bermudan rigged sloop or cutter (though this does cover most current production boats). However there is little recognition that other types of boat and rig, other than passing mentions to power cruisers, are suitable. To be fair fibreglass Bermudan rigged sloops/cutters are the type of boat that the Glecklers have experience of and if this is your preferred choice of boat then the book will provide lots of useful info.

Having said that there is a wealth of additional info of use to all those thinking about the cruising life and not just salty sea dog stuff, but fundamental issues such as why and how and realistic expectations of what the cruising life may offer. The book is very well written, occasionally humorous, very easy to read and excellent value.

If you want to read an alternative view of cruising, look at Annie Hills 'Voyaging on a small income'. I would suggest that if you read Annie's book in conjunction with 'All About Cruising' you would have all the info you need to make a reasoned decision about the type of cruising alternatives, rationales for them and suitability for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must-have book for blue-water cruisers!, 28 Nov 1998
By A Customer
In "All About Cruising", Walt Gleckler has compiled a guide that should be on every prospective blue-water cruiser's library shelf. As an editor, and first mate on a similar sailing vessel, I can certifiably attest to Walt and Anna's comprehensive knowledge and-perhaps as important--their ability to present this information in a readable, step-oriented format. In fact, this cruising guide will be of interest not only to "wanabees", but to the "been there, done that" crowd who can share many of the experiences related in the book...Marty Campbell

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for any cruiser., 28 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This book answers many questions that any cruiser(novice or experienced) would have before escaping to the wonderful world of cruising. It simplifies many areas of concern and opens ones mind to others. This book appears to be written "cook book" fashion, making it easy to reference different areas in the book.
