5.0 out of 5 stars A users review, 28 Jan 2007
By Paul Ingram "Photographer" (Wales - United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ask many different photographers for advice and guidance on learning the zone system (as I did) and you will get as many different replies. Also, many books written on the subject unnecessarily complicate their explanations and therefore discourage beginners. Considering that exposure is the most important concept in all of photography, anyone with more than a passing interest and a desire to create beautiful pictures will sooner or later arrive at the door of the zone system. Photography and the zone system go hand-in-hand like red wine and steak. I had purchased at least 4 different books on the subject and still been confused until I read the book by Mr. Farzad. Within 1 hour I suddenly realized how simple it all was and was wondering why it hadn't been explained so simply before this publication! Copiously illustrated with simple diagrams I would defy anyone to not understand the zone system after the first read of this book. For the past 4 years I have been teaching photography at my local college and I use the simple explanations as taught in the book with my students. Within an hour or two, 90% of the class find the zone system it simplicity itself. Do yourself a favor, stop being confused and read this book, your pictures will benefit almost instantly. Check out Mr.Farzads website and look at his photography, the quality of his images speak for themselves and are a testament to his book. I would have no reservations at awarding this book 10 out of 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars MARVELLOUS !!!, 22 Sep 2007
By Dr. Nadeem A. Afzal (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A thank you to Mr Farzad for writing such a grand book on spot metering. I was stuck in a vicious cycle of upgrading the cameras with even more megapixels (and adding to those list of prime lenses) hoping for better pictures, where in fact I really needed my skills update. I can now for the first time see that sky is the limit.

'Simplified zone system' is a reflection of Mr Farzad's genius. I myself teach under and post graduates in my line and know as a fact that the simplest things are indeed the hardest things in life. Absolutely superb !!!

I have taken the advice from the book, which already is paying off. I now own only two lenses. (weight, price and lens build quality have been the other determining factors in purchase of these)

a. Nikon 35-70 mm 2.8 zoom
b. Nikon 70-210 mm 4-5.6 zoom

My congratulations and gratitude to the author (photography was becoming very frustrating for me). I would say this is a must book for any photographer.

REVIEW:
The book is written in simple English. One concept per page with lots of examples and pictures (almost 3 pictures to one concept). Once you start reading it is very hard to put down because it flows from one concept to next. Needless to say it is extremely easy to understand. Spot metering is a nightmare and I have endlessly googled and read numerous books (without understanding anything). Also, I am a picky reader and have a bad habit of reading from the most interesting picture. No sir! not in this case, this is one of those rare gems which I read cover to cover (and understood every word of it) !!!

SUMMARY:
SIMPLY MARVELLOUS !!!

PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS:
I have been photographing since 2003 (with both film and digital cameras).

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget all other exposure books, 14 May 2009
To get the best photos out of a DSLR you have to work in manual mode. I have never come across any book that is as good as this one when it comes to learning about learning photographic exposure. The quality of my photos has gone up more than just a notch. Forget all other books and make sure this is one you get as your definitive guide.
