4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful big pictures and a nice story!, 9 Aug 2000

This book is actually a bit wasted on young (below 5ish) kids in terms of what they can read and understand on their own. However, if you enjoy reading with them, talking about pictures, and translating the story into appropriate terms, you'll get hours of fun out of it. The themes are good ones (may even get YOU thinking!), the images it creates are amusing, and the pictures are gorgeous and worth having in their own right. My only reservations would be that (1) the language used is fairly complex and doesn't read aloud all that well if approached too much word-for-word and (2) there are a couple of words used that I struggled to translate from American.. and here was me thinking that the Cat in the Hat had prepared me for all that! Still, they aren't serious reservations. I'll happily translate into 3-year-old English for now, and be very proud when my son can read and understand the book on his own.
