This book did more to start the body modification renascence than any other cause. It brought to people's private worlds, the possibilities that they may have harboured, as secret obsessions, and made them realise that they were neither unique nor alone in their feelings. It illustrated (poorly in most examples) some of the more 'outrageous' aspects of body modification at a time when 'nice people' did not get tattoos and a nose piercing, in a westerner, was considered the 'depths of masochistic sickness'. It was written at a time when people were enjoying being 'deliciously shocked' - at a time when books on freaks were being published against the politically correct trend of the '80's, - and shock it did. How ever the body modification evolution has come a long way since this book was published, and much of what it shows it has been superseded, and many flaws in it have emerged, but it still stands as the most influential book of its kind over twenty years on.

Still got to be the best book of it's kind so far.

Written by people with a passionate interest in the subject and a personal knowledge.

Unlike much of the pseudo sociological mumbo jumbo written about the subjects of tattooing, piercing and body modification the people in this project have a rapport with their subjects based on common ground.

Don't be put off by the price... It's still in print because no one has so far got round to writing a better book on the subject.

Buy the book, it could change your life, or at least open your eyes and mind!

Whenever someone asks me about any aspect of body play, whether it is piercing, tattoos, corset-training or anything else, I always lend them my copy of this or tell them to buy a copy.

It has interviews with a wide range of people involved in the body modification community, from the exquisite Fakir Musafar to Genesis P-Orridge. The interviews cover the philosophy behind the different people's approaches to body mods, the history of body mods, and some of the modifications that can be made to the body.

The range of body modifications discussed in the book means that there is something to interest most people who are just getting into the BM scene. The authors obviously had a very deep interest in this area and that is reflected in the quality of the research.

If your interest in body art/body play runs deeper than the fact that David Beckham has a few tattoos then this book is for you. As yet I haven't seen any books that beat this on the subject, and I've seen a lot of them.
