Marketplace-style training manual, 27 May 2003
Other beginning bdsm books tend to cover technique, the coming out process, finding partners, and the like. This book is unique in that it covers the philosophies and psychology of real life dominance and submission -- not role play or scening, but living as dominant and submissive. For those who have read the Marketplace series of books by Sara Adamson, this is a handbook for that kind of realtime slavery -- attitudes, general guidelines for training, helpful thoughts, things to look out for, goal setting for slaves and training, and so forth. It sets out codes of ethics, models for D/s relationships, realtime issues, and expanding slavery beyond someone who just gets you off in the bedroom, but to someone who is in role 24/7 and who is a part of your larger life (attache, assistant, secretary, valet, cook, etc.). The book, as Ms. Abernathy says, looks at slavery in a larger context than most beginning books will allow. For that reason, it's actually not explicit. There is no masturbatory material -- NONE. The book doesn't get too terribly specific, in part, because Ms. Abernathy attempts to allow the people involved to expand their definition of D/s to include what is comfortable and meaningful for them. It DOES, as a previous reviewer states, mention the importance of the slave knowing how their owner likes their socks folded if the owner has them on laundry duty, and it also mentions forcing the slave to refold a basket of socks if they continually get it wrong as a means to train them correctly. However, the book isn't about folding socks, but in techniques for teaching people (slaves) to be what you, the trainer/owner want them and need them to be to you. So . . . if you want smut, look elsewhere. If a Marketplace style relationship is of interest to you, this might be a nice addition to your collection of bdsm library.
