If you only buy one book on e-publishing, make it this one.., 26 Oct 2002
On the face of it, this book promises an impossible amount of information;
from formatting and producing ebooks, pricing strategies, hot topics to
write about, automating payment, sales and marketing ploys, access to useful
hyperlinks, and more. You get the picture? When I first started reading it,
I was sceptical, but within a couple of chapters, I realised that this was
one incredibly generous author. I bought the hardcopy but as I read, I
realised that a downloadable Ebook was also available which would have made
much more sense because of the instant availability of the hyperlinks.
(Ebooks have a facility which allows the reader to click on hyperlinks and
go immediately to the website featured.) However, when I contacted James, he
told me he was just then updating links and making some revisions.
If you have a yen to start Epublishing your own work, and it really isn't
difficult, I can't recommend a more comprehensive book to get you started.
Apart from the content mentioned above, James also deals at length with
subjects such as ISBN, copyright, barcoding, pricing books and the thorny
question of giving them away in order to secure further orders, security of
your text to prevent plagiarism or straight ripping off, delivery, Ebook
publishing software, print-on demand paper bound books, and tracking and
measuring results from your web sales.
Since I looked into the possibility of going into Epublishing, I've read
several books on the subject, but this is one I go back to time and time
again. Having imagined it would be a difficult and technical read, I found I
read it at more or less a straight sitting when I first picked it up because
of the way it is structured. Since then I've referred back to it to clear up
various questions. I now have a copy of the Ebook version and find the
ability to instantly contact the various websites mentioned a real boon.
If you only buy one book on Epublishing, buy this one. It tells you
everything you need to know and as I said above, is written with such
generosity of spirit by an author who is genuinely keen to share his
knowledge.

Quite informative, 7 Jul 2007
Quite informative (if inevitably now out of date in places) but I didn't find the structure helpful. Would have been improved by more careful editing.
