4.0 out of 5 stars useful to most guitarist, 9 Jan 2000
Fretboard Logic SE

Having read all the customer comments and raves about this book I bought it without hesitation thinking I'd found the holy grail of the fretboard, However the first part of the book is about scales based on the CAGED (scales derived from common chord shapes) and easy to remember pattern systems, the second part is about chords used as triads. If all this is alien to you buy this book now as it explains these systems in a non-technical manner and makes an ideal reference work for beginners. For somebody like myself who already understands the CAGED system and has a basic understanding of chord theory there is not of new material here, the simple lead patterns (3 octave scales) leave a lot of the fretboard unused and there is little information about how to use these scales (apparently this subject is to be found in book 3 of the series). Overall I would say this book is a good way to learn your scales if you don't want to learn all the theory it is useful to most guitarist but it is not all it's hyped up to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 21 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I bought this book quite recently and have found it to be very useful in expanding my knowledge of the fretboard, particularly when improvising. I also bought The Caged Guitarist by Paul Foad but found it to be rather short on practical advice on actually applying the information (it's also a very thin book with very large text and diagrams which could probably be condensed even smaller). Fretboard Logic is much more comprehensive and it seems to approach developing methods like the caged system in a more structured manner.

The only drawback with this book (and The Caged Guitarist) is that whilst it contains information for beginners, and it does make more sense to learn to play within this sort of framework, the text is rather too dry and theory-based to appeal to beginners - it would need to be used in conjunction with a teacher who can create fun exercises based on the theory.

However, for the experienced guitarist who has reasonable ability and some knowledge of theory, this is a great way to fill in the gaps in your fluency moving around the neck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but deserves the hype..., 28 Mar 2005
I found this this really useful, I am an intermediate level player who has never really bothered to get involved in much of the theory. Yes it does just go over the CAGED system and the related scales but it does explain things very well, and is pretty comprehensive. It is somewhat dry in places but then any theory book is likely to be. I think the 'Guitar Handbook' and Sokolow's 'Fretboard Roadmaps' are useful complements, there will be some repetition but having all 3 will cover most of the bases. The write-ups from satisfied punters on the cover are a little OTT but there is no doubt this is a useful book to have for non-experts.
