I first read this book 10 years ago when I was having much difflculty being newly married to a man who suffered from alcoholism. I can honestly say that 'Getting Them Sober' is one of the main reasons we are still together today and he is 10 years a sober man. You learn that you cannot change anything they do, but you can sure change yourself and the way you react and deal with their behaviour. The book gives you tools to change your life for the better. You will learn your self-worth and how to cope with the devastating effects alcohol abuse can have on you and your whole family. I have since bought many copies over the years for friends in similar circumstances. All of whom found the book to be a real help. If you are really serious about wanting things to change for the better in your relationship with an alcoholic, you will find no better place to start than this book. You will soon understand so much about your partner's alcoholism as well as the part you play in enabling it to continue. After reading this for the first time, I was able to help my husband by first helping myself. I then attended ALANON meetings. My husband soon realised he was only going one way: down. That's when he started to attend AA. Since then we have enjoyed 10 totally sober, happy, easy fun years together. And it all started with me reading this simple, honest little book. Good luck, by the way. I know how difficult it all is, believe me.

Finally, some PRACTICAL information on how to deal with the addict in your life. It explains how and why the addict tries to control and manipulate you and how you can avoid/deal with it. It also explains why you should work on getting better yourself first, the addict will follow. Highly recommended.

Most books about alcoholism are written by reformed alcoholics, who have lots of experience of being an alcoholic, but not much about living with one!

This book tells what it is like to love or live with an alcoholic. It is astonishing, it gave me the courage to leave my husband. It is a practical book, and it does contain life changing information. I would recommend this one thousand times to anyone unfortunate enough to love an alcoholic...
