Product Description

Review

"Fantastic writing that handles issues sensitively and with total confidence. Liz and Doug's story is one anyone and everyone can relate to and that's the magic of this book. I couldn't put it down." --Rae Earl, author of 'My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary'

Product Description

"I have to listen very hard to hear what he says. Watching his mouth helps but it makes me blush. He s staring at mine. Just like he was staring at that girl s the other day. So maybe she s not his girlfriend, after all..."

Do you ever feel that life isn't turning out quite as you planned?
Meet Liz. Bullied at college, disillusioned at home and seriously lacking in self-esteem, Liz has to contend with the Russell twins, a man in pyjamas sharing her mum's bed, and size 9 feet.

Do you ever wish that you could find someone who really 'gets' you?
Meet Doug. Gorgeous, strong willed and unlike anyone Liz has ever met, Doug transforms the way Liz looks at herself and her life. And for the first time ever, Liz is actually happy.

Two great people from very different worlds = one amazing relationship.
They say opposites attract. But will the gap between Liz and Doug prove too much to handle?

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking, yet amazing!, 26 Jun 2008
By Brian Gardner (Taylorsville, UT USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Give Me A Sign is the story of Liz, a 16 year old who faces a great deal of challenges in her life. At home, she is unable to understand why her mother has so quickly erased her fathers existence, at the same time currently sleeps with another man. When at school and out on the town, she is bullied by the Russel twins, who make fun of her height, looks and size 9 feet. Then her heart beats uncontrollably whenever she is around Doug, a gorgeous, strong willed man who she madly wishes to be with, and amazingly transforms her life. She begins to see the world differently, takes chances, learns BSL and goes from a low self esteem Giraffe to a graceful Swan.

It was only recently I stumbled upon Shanta Everington's first work; Marilyn and Me. After finishing it, I quickly purchased and eagerly awaited the arrival of Give Me A Sign. Shanta has a very special gift as a writer. In such a short period of time, you come to understand and feel for the character at the heart of the story. She has a unique ability to make you excited, scared, nervous, heartbroken or even full of hope right along with her character. So many writers do an amazing job at painting the world in which their characters live and breathe in with very little effort, while they spend tremendous effort on bringing the characters to life. Shanta has the ability to perfectly paint her characters with very little effort, which draws you in very quickly, and powerfully.

For anyone looking for a fresh and wonderful new author to populate their bookshelves, look no further then Shanta and her books. You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars engaging story of first love, 23 Jun 2008
Liz's mother keeps telling her, "Life's not fair... you deal with it, like an adult." Liz's life certainly doesn't feel fair, but she's not quite an adult. She's 16 and she's struggling to deal with it. Then she meets Doug, who has recently started college after leaving a deaf boarding school. Doug is gorgeous and strong-willed. Best of all, he's genuinely interested in Liz and he asks her out. Liz throws herself into being his girlfriend, taking lessons in British Sign Lanugage so that she can feel closer to him, and trying to impress his family. But the couple start to meet prejuidice from all sides. Can their relationship survive?

I found it very hard to put this book down; I immediately cared about Liz and I felt involved in her life and problems. The book touches on many issues, including coping with bereavement, bullying, love and prejudice, but these topics never swamp the story, and Liz's feelings and gradual increase in confidence and maturity are always at the forefront. Liz's adventures in BSL were also fantastically described.

This is a consistently well-written and engaging story of first love and finding your place in the world.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, 22 Oct 2009
I loved the story, really easy to read and hard to put down. The main character Liz is easy to identify with. She starts as such a shy, unconfident person but gradually finds herself and becomes so much more confident and interesting than she ever thought she could be. It's sad in places but also inspirational and uplifting. I will definately be purchasing Shanta Everington's other novel too!
