5.0 out of 5 stars The China Bird, 26 April 2009
By Rachel Carruthers (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The China Bird drew me in from the first chapter. You really feel like you know and care for the characters who unfold their lives and tender hidden memories to you. If you're a busy person this is a great book you can put down and get straight back into, however I couldn't put it down, it had me hook-line and sinker.

5.0 out of 5 stars The China Bird, 3 Sep 2009
By Sally Winter (Sheffield) - See all my reviews
This is an intricately plotted novel, whose characters stay in your mind long after you have finished reading. The book explores themes of acceptance and intolerance of difference and the damage caused by searching for unrealistic perfection. Ultimately optimistic, the story shows that with courage it is possible to open yourself up to new experiences at any stage of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars sensitive exploration of disability, 4 Jun 2009
I raced through this book, both wanting to 'see what happens', and yet not wanting it to end, because I was enjoying it so much. The portrayal of a person with a disability was superb, as Edward displayed both fiesty characteristics not often associated with a person with a disability, challenging others with their prejudice and yet also reverting to self pity and defensiveness, putting his both strangers and his young friend Angela in turmoil as to how to approach him. Bryony Doran has captured a most unusual and complex relationship in this story and I cant wait to read her next book!
