5.0 out of 5 stars "Metamorphosis of a Courtesan", 31 Oct 2006
This is a both a literary novel and a mesmerizing yarn. Like the male protagonist, the reader is soon under the spell of an ancient landscape and, in its midst, a city with a glorious past. Noble ladies in frescoes (one of them seems to be changing), a curvaceous kitchen-maid, the statue of a Madonna which keeps weeping blood and a manic art collector: all these and eventually a fatal accident contribute to a riddle which the art historian Leander Merten, who is recuperating after surgery, feels irresistibly drawn to. He decides he has to find the answer, despite repeated warnings that sinister forces may be working against him. There are touches of magic realism throughout, and these are heightened by the customs and superstitions of the country folk whom the protagonist encounters. With its historical and literary references, the book is a wonderful challenge to perceptive readers. An example: who, if not the famous Boccaccio, is that long dead master of the erotic tale whose metamorphosed lovers make a compelling guest appearance near the end? A complex and polished book by an author whose background and writing leave no doubt that he is aware of belonging to a great tradition of extra-territorial novelists.
