Product Description

Book Description

Riding the Dragon is the second book in Will Hatchett's dragon trilogy. Its hero is Austin Endicott, a pilot who gained his wings in the First World War and who now works for Imperial Airways, at Croydon Aerodrome. The action begins in 1939, on the first day of the Second World War. Austin returns to his cottage in Ashtead only to find that his wife and daughter are missing. Distressed, he seeks the help of his best friend, Daily Express reporter Harry Hawkins. Austin discovers that his adversary is the Most Evil Man in Britain and that the kidnapping is part of a murky conspiracy seeking to help Germany to win the war, by invoking colossal supernatural forces that he must do battle with.

From the Publisher

Hatchett retains the pace and thrill factor or his previous Austin Endicott Novel, Dragon Rising, combined with his usual lively dialogue, humour and eye for detail. This book takes the story to the middle years of Austin's life. It evokes a London desperately clinging to a sense of normality as it enters the phony war. Its cast of characters includes Satanists, a black witch and a cat burgler. Much of the action takes place on the astral plane so the the book, at times, has the surreal quality of a hallucination or a dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better and better, 29 Dec 2008
By Stalwart "'wart" (West Riding) - See all my reviews
Hatchett's last novel was good, this is better! The first reading was in 2 sittings - to London from Yorkshire and then back! The second reading was taken more slowly with opportunity taken to enjoy the details, the nuances, the wit. I reread his previous work after this and enjoyed that more this time around. I would buy them both and revel in them!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nazis, Satanists and dragons - what's not to like?, 9 Oct 2008
Here's a curiosity, I thought, as I read the press release about Riding The Dragon. A self-published book that sounds like a proper old-fashioned adventure yarn. Stiff-upper-lip British First World War heroes at the dawn of the Second War, getting horribly mixed up with the occultist and Aleister Crowley, called the Wickedest Man in the Word, the journalist and later Member of Parliament Tom Driberg (both real people) and, finally, the devil. Nazis, Satanists and dragons - what's not to like?

I talked to the author, Will Hatchett, a personable journalist whose runs an environmental trade magazine. There must be something missing in his day job as he has created an entirely believable, unbelievable tale There's no messing around. The hero, Austin Endicott, returns home after a day's work as an Airline pilot, only to find - by the third paragraph - that his wife and daughter have disappeared.

Riding The Dragon is the second in Hatchett's Dragon trilogy. Its mix of jolly-good-show service banter, period detail, snappy dialogue and a great serving of humor make it a peculiarly English, thoroughly good read, well written in an appropriately old-fashioned style. I have a feeling that John '39 Steps' Buchan would have loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another page turner, 22 May 2008
By Jake A. Brown (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Another page turner from Hatchett. This time we journey with Arthur Endicott back into the world of the occult as he battles to rescue his wife and child. With Europe on the brink of war Endicott discovers a plot that threatens to unleash timeless and sinister forces.

Hatchett's attention to detail is impeccable. Skillfully evoking the atmosphere of 1930's Britain he explores some of the esoteric underworlds of the era. He takes us from the illicit Jazz bars of Soho to the Satanic cults of Alasteir Crowley weaving a compelling and captivating adventure story.

If you've just discovered Hatchett you're in for a treat. This window on the occult is a fantasticaly old-school yarn that illuminates as much as it entertains.
