5.0 out of 5 stars A wide range of styles and themes, 5 Jun 2007
By S. P. ELLINAS "Caricatures and Cartoons" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Short stories are an ideal snapshot inside a writer's creativity and imagination. This selection displays a staggering array of talent with the styles and themes being equally diverse. From the tragic to the comic and the whimsical to the dark, there is plenty here to occupy many a long train journey without the fatigue that sometimes accompanies reading a long novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, fun, inspiring stories, 5 Jun 2007
I am the author of one of the stories, so of course will not comment on my own, but I can certainly comment on the other stories in the colletion: Each one has a different flavour, and they all make you want to read more.

I gasped with Eric Glambik-Boe's Angel, cried with Sea Horses, laughed with Lost and Found.

And, do you want to know why My Brother Died and All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt? Well, you'll have to read the book!

1.0 out of 5 stars For lovers of pretentious writing only, 1 Mar 2008
There are only two good stories in this overpriced (£9.99 for big sans serif type which should never be used for body copy, it strains the eye) book; 'Seahouses' and 'Slapstick and Tickle'. The rest merge into meandering, story-free slices of pretentiousness and unoriginal diatribes regarding the usual subjects - death, relationships and childhood. The worst offender is 'Guesswork' which is a badly written, nastily executed 'tale' of a student's last day in his flat. A spellbinding topic if ever there was one. It's writing like this that killed off the popularity of the short story in the first place. The only way to enjoy this book is to count up the number of spelling and grammatical errors as you go. Yes, play at being an editor! See how many paragraphs you could easily cut from 'Becoming Friday' among others.

If this is the future of British writing then it is a grim one. Granted, reading Roald Dahl's complete collection of short stories (typeset in cosy times roman I may add) before coming to this collection coloured my expectations of what a short story can deliver. Dahl should be read by any writer of short stories before pen is even set to paper. Short fiction doesn't need to be up itself. The Tonto authors are desperate to be 'oh so literary' but have no idea of how to hook a reader, how to entertain with great characterisation, or even how to surprise just a little. As a short story fan this book is going straight to the charity shop. I'm embarrassed to have it on my shelves.
